Registration is now open for the Geological Society of Connecticut 2018 spring field trip to be held on Saturday June 30.
The trip will be limited to 60 attendees. Cost is $50 for GSC members, $25 for GSC student members, and $75 for non-members. A 60-page guide book with map is included.
This year's trip will run from 9AM to 4 PM and focus exclusively on the geology, mineralogy and mining history of Old Mine Park and vicinity in northern Trumbull. All attendees must meet at 830 AM at the DOT commuter lot near the intersection of Routes 25 and 111 in Trumbull where we will car pool a couple of miles to the first stop, which is outside of the park. DO NOT PARK IN OLD MINE PARK because parking there is for Trumbull residents only and your vehicle may be ticketed. Car pool vehicles will be parked on a town road during our visit to the park and can be accessed at any time during the trip, if necessary. We will be a <15 minute walk away from them. Most of the trip will be conducted along established trails, but hiking footwear is strongly recommended. Attendees are responsible for their own food and drink during the trip. There are rest room facilities at the park. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and insect/tick repellant. Poison ivy may be lurking about, too.
Your trip leaders Bill Devlin, Harold Moritz and Bob Wintsch will spend the day showcasing and discussing the varied aspects of this unique area, including details from new, detailed geologic mapping, petrologic and stratigraphic studies, radiometric dating, and tectonic structure. The mineralogy includes amphibolite-hosted scheelite (and localized ferberite pseudomorphing and tungstite alteration); metasomatic alteration of the amphibolite; enigmatic cross-cutting hydrothermal muscovite-quartz, albite or calcite-rich veins hosting fluorite, topaz (with local margarite pseudomorphing), chlorite and rarely beryl (emerald?); and brittle-fault-hosted quartz-calcite-flourite-sulfide veins. The known or potential relationships between the geology and the mineralogy will be explored at mining locations old and new.
An optional, post-field trip gathering will take place from 5 to 7 PM at Veracious Brewing, 246 Main Street (Route 25), Monroe. Cost for attendees is $15. It is located 1.9 miles north of the intersection of Routes 25 and 111 on the right side of the road (heading north). It can be difficult to see, so turn into the parking lot immediately after the very large flag pole on the right and park anywhere in the lot. GSC has reserved a private space in the brewery (where attendees must be 21 or older) adjacent to the public tasting room. Underage attendees must remain in the public tasting room, where anyone else can hang out also. Food will be provided by GSC (featuring BBQ, mac & cheese and lots of sides from nearby DrewbaQ Smoke Shack!) and attendees can bring their own food, too. But no outside beverages of any kind are allowed in the brewery. Beer (a large, excellent selection), wine, water and soft drinks are available at attendees’ own cost from the bar. After 7PM attendees can remain in the public tasting room on their own until the brewery closes at 9 PM. There will be music starting around 6:30, so stick around!
Hope to see you there!
