GSC Distinguished Lecturer
The Geological Society of Connecticut Distinguished Lecturer program (GSC DL) brings outstanding speakers to university and college campuses statewide to present technical talks to student audiences on subjects related to Connecticut geology. Each year the GSC will select 1-2 lecturers who will each visit 2-4 campuses (4 total lectures maximum). The GSC will cover travel expenses from the speaker’s home location to the hosting institution and host institutions will be expected to cover any on-site costs.
The inaugural 2019-2020 GSC DL is Ralph Lewis -- Professor in Residence, Marine Sciences Department, UCONN-Avery Point; past GSC President; and retired State Geologist. We anticipate COVID conditions will enable the return of these lectures in the fall. Details will be posted as health conditions become clear.
Ralph has agreed to present on three topics:
“Geology of Long Island Sound - How it Formed and How We Know”: A discussion of how marine mapping tools have been used to piece together our present understanding of the geologic history of Long Island Sound.
“The Unique Connecticut Coast - An Atypical, Low-Energy, Sediment-Starved, Bedrock- Dominated Coastline”: An examination of the characteristics that make the Connecticut shoreline different, in form and function, from the shorelines typically discussed in textbooks and in coastal management literature.
“A Geologic Introduction to The Hartford Basin” A geologic overview of the formation of the unsuccessful rift known as the Hartford Basin. What happened and how that shaped the landforms we recognize in the Basin today. This talk draws from “Arboretum Bulletin No. 41 (2013): Trap Rock Ridges of Connecticut: Natural History and Land Use by Penelope C. Sharp, Ralph S. Lewis, David L. Wagner and Cara Lee which is available as a free PDF download from the Connecticut College Digital Commons @ Connecticut College.
If you are interested in scheduling one of these lectures at your institution, please email your request to [email protected] with your preferred topic and date(s) for consideration.
