From time to time, the GSC news blast will include a section on member news. If you would like to submit member news for the news blast, please send it to [email protected] by the 21st of the month. It will appear in the next news blast (either the following month or the month after that). Submissions should be no longer than 3 or 4 sentences and may undergo light editing. Accompanying photograph(s) are welcome.

An inspiration for women geology students
Written by Joop Varekamp, who met Ellen Thomas as a first year student; they have been married now for almost 50 years. E&ES emeritus professor, Wesleyan University, Middletown CT, [email protected] Ellen Thomas grew up in a small town in the eastern Netherlands, where the expectation was that she would become a housewife. Instead, Ellen went to Utrecht University and studied Geology, at that time one of the more strongly male dominated areas of science.
